Wooden Reels

durable, customizable, and eco-friendly
for cable storage, transport, and creative reuse

Wooden reels are sturdy, durable containers for winding and storing cables, made from natural wood like pine or birch, or from plywood. They consist of a central cylinder with two end discs and vary in size depending on the cable’s diameter and length. These reels can be reusable, made for single use, or used for export, with the choice of wood type often depending on the application’s strength and lightweight needs

Size and customization

  • Size variation: Dimensions vary significantly, from around 60 to 200 cm in diameter, depending on the cable and application.
  • Traverse: The “traverse” is the length of the central drum, or the distance between the two inner flanges. This determines how much wire can be safely wound on the reel.
  • Customization: Reels can be customized for different traverse lengths, flange diameters, and finishes, such as painting or printing.
  • Arbor hole: Many reels have a central arbor hole to make them easier to hoist and move, especially when fully loaded.

Construction and materials

  • Natural wood: Often made from pine or birch, which are easy to process and durable enough for many uses.
  • Plywood: Frequently used for large industrial reels or for single-use reels. Flanges are typically made from plywood, while the barrel can be made from staves or a plywood barrel.
  • Barrel: The central cylinder can be made from laminated wooden planks called staves or from a plywood barrel.
  • Flanges: Plywood disks are attached to each end of the barrel to keep its shape and stabilize it.
